The long term objective of this research is to increase the quality of human resources in Indonesia,
especially the students of elementary school who suffer anemia. Furthermore, the focused target of such a
research is to find an effective as well as safe model of Fe and Zn supplementation to: (1) increase the
content of Hb, (2) accelerate the growth (the nutrition status), and (3) improve the cognitive development of
the anemic elementary school students.
In the second year, the research design is Randomized Control Trial double blinded. With this design, the
research subjects were randomly divided into two treatment groups, i.e. (1) one group had 10 mg Fe in the
form of candy once a day; (2) the other group had 10 mg Fe and Zn in the form of candy once a day.
The results of the study show that a significant difference occurs between the content of Hb before and
after the supplementation either Fe candy or a combination of Fe and Zn candy (p=0,0001). However, No
significant difference happens between the two treatments (p=0,5346). There is a significant difference
between the nutrition status before and after the Fe candy and Fe+Zn candy supplements (p=0,020), but
there is no difference between the two treatments (p=0,078). The findings also demonstrate that there is
no difference on the level of cognitive development to happen between the two treatments (p=0,649).
The supplement in the form of candy is recommended as one alternative of supplement except for syrup
and pills. The substance combination candy is more suggested to give than the single substance one.
Moreover once-a-day treatment is also recommended for the students.
