Translation is extremely needed in communication since they have problem with the language used. The result of translation needs to evaluate. It is to show and to ensure that the translator is consistent in keeping similar message between source and target language. Meaning equivalence becomes the main consideration. This study focuses on the implementation of assessment in literary translation work. Moreover, it is dealing with the development model of translation assessment. There are four factors considered to develop the assessment instrument on literary translation. This study applies qualitative research. The source of data are document and informant. This study uses focus group discussion and expert’s judgment as the technique for collecting data. The collected data are analyzed by using interactive analysis. The result of the study shows that the implementation of assessment on literary translation work could be run well by focusing on the accuracy (4), sense of literature (3) acceptability (2) and readability (1). They become the focus for implementing literary translation assessment. Based on the result of focus group discussion, the assessment of literary work needs special attention not only the accuracy but also sense of literature. Accuracy tends to reflect the message or meaning while sense of literature reflecting the form. Between accuracy and sense of literature are completing one to another.

Improving Student’s Translation Skill By Using Interactive Method For The Sixth Semester Students Of English Department In 2013 – 2014 Academic Year

The purposes of this research are to apply the interactive method for increasing the quality of teaching Translation course and to improve students’ ability in translating text from English into Indonesian. Therefore, the proposed problems in this classroom action research are; 1) is the interactive method able to increase teaching quality of Translation course? and 2) is interactive teaching method able to improve students’ ability in translating text from English into Indonesian? This research applies the action classroom research. The selected class as the location of research is class A, semester VI in 2013-2014 academic year. This class has 43 students. This research uses 4 cycles consisting of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The results of the research show that interactive method is able to be used as an effort to improve students’ ability in translation skill. This method can improve; 1) learning activity of students, 2) students’ interaction in teaching leaning process, 3) students’ activeness, and 4) students’ ability in translating text from English into Indonesian. By applying the interactive method, students are able to interact with other students that support their activeness. The increasing of those interaction and activity has impact to the improvement of students’ ability in joining the teaching learning process. The progress of students’ ability can be seen also from the increasing of average score. In the beginning of teaching (pre-test) the average score is 6.0 while in the end of the class (post-test), the score is 7.3. It means that there is a significant improvement in teaching learning process on Translation course. The teaching learning process of translation course becomes more interesting. The students feel more comfortable and enjoyable in joining the course.

Indonesian Folktales in English Translation Text and Its Illustrations Perceived as a Medium of Developing Student's English Vocabulary

This article is part of my thesis which was applying case study research method studying the use of Indonesian folktales in English translation (IFET) text and its illustrations in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classes at primary level. Visual culture theory and approaches to language teaching were two chosen theories to investigate the cases in two different primary schools in Solo, Central Java Indonesia. Interview with primary English teachers became primary data source for this study. The EFL teachers from two different primary schools described their use of IFET and its illustrations – folktales illustrations – as a set of medium instruction to develop their students’ English vocabulary. The teacher participants’ delineation about designing their teaching materials were then discussed and contrasted to describe similarities and differences interpretively. To strengthen the stance of this study through its research evidence, the researcher interviewed six students of each school using visual elicitation method. One of the findings of this research showed that teachers’ effort on providing familiar teaching materials such as IFET was perceived to be succeeded in developing students’ English vocabulary.
