TAJDID PEMIKIRAN DAN WACANA MEMBANGUN “THE GREATER TRADITION” DALAM PERSYARIKATAN MUHAMMADIYAH

Abstract

Muhammadiyah since its beginning has faced its attention in order that Islam does not fall under the domination of local traditions so that this religion loses its élan vital. The existence of the institution has pioneered the emergence of religious spirit based on rationality and the will to reach advance (tajdid or reform) but it remains to pay attention to the real demand of the human lives in this modern century in order that religion is not marginalized. Top and down of the development of the movement has gone together with Muslim society to the belief that the ability to do individual interpretation and judgment (ijtihad) in the context of the advance of the era has created condition where Islam can be broadly accepted. With all its potentials, Muhammadiyah has played a very important role in building great tradition for the development of Islam in Indonesia.
