The use of chlorine material at pulp bleaching process produces some dangerous compounds such as dioxin and chloroform as result of chlorination of organic material. Beside that, remain of chlorine is a toxic in environment. These negative effects accelerate the substitution of chlorine as bleaching agent by other environmentally friendly substance. Hydrogen peroxide is the potential material which can replace chlorine compound in bleaching process. The effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide as bleaching agent is influenced by some metal ions in the pulp. Metal ions in the pulp can reduce the ability of hydrogen peroxide to bleach the pulp. Metal ions in the pulp can be removed by chelating process. About 10 gram dry pulp added by EDTA and H2SO4 at various compositions and then heated at several time and temperature. Filtrates from this process are analyzed by AAS. These results show that optimal condition to remove Fe+2 and Cu+2 is found when chelating process was conducted with addition of EDTA 0.2% and H2SO4 0.2% of dry pulp at 70oC and 60 minute. Unfortunately, this condition is not appropriate to remove Mn+2. Suitable conditions to remove Mn+2 are addition of EDTA is 0.8%, H2SO4 is 0.2% at 70oC for 60 minute.en_US
