    Abstract
In general, the compaction tool to create specimen in the road pavement materials at laboratories still use vertical compaction system. While the process of compaction in the field in general using the roller with vibration effects. This could potentially lead to differences between the characteristics of the density and mix of properties in the laboratory and in the field. This difference of compaction system can cause the asphalt mixture spread on the field error. A mistake is not the optimum composition and properties of asphalt mixtures in the field. So, it required the roller in the laboratory using a compaction system like the system used in the field. This paper aims to report the results of engineering development of roller compactor system at laboratory scale. Engineering development of tool is to simulate the compaction of layer pavement systems in the field using the roller. Scope of engineering development tools include the concept of loading, the main body frame design, bath design work, wheel load, the motor design, the portal trunk ballast design, and mold design of the test specimen. Design tool is part of the excellent research Excellence Research Incentive Empowerment UMS. Manufacturing prototype devices will be made in 2010 and the results of the compaction properties of this new tool will be investigated in 2011. This paper is expected to be able to significantly contribute to the development of science in the field of pavement material.
