    Abstract
    The tremendous utilization of plastics leads to environmental problems due to lack of degradability of plastics. Explorations of methods to solve plastic waste problem has been explored widely. Incineration is simple way to handle plastic waste, but it is not environment friendly. Pyrolysis has been proposed to solve problem of plastic waste. Characteristics of plastic waste should be understood to determine the operating conditions of pyrolysis. This paper reports the study of characteristics of selected plastics waste from packaging utilization. Characterization of plastic waste comprises water content, ash content and degradation temperature or decomposition temperature. Water content test was conducted by using oven at the temperature of 110 °C for about 2 hours. Ash content test was performed in furnace at the temperature up to 1000 °C. Thermal stability or thermal decomposition test was conducted by using thermogravimetric analyzer Mettler at temperature up to 1000°C. It was found that water content of plastics waste was 0.69± 0.11 %, while ash content was 2.36±1.03 %. Thermal decomposition test has shown that plastic waste from packaging application decomposed at temperature of 300-500°C. Based on the TG result, pyrolysis process should be conducted in the range of 300-500°C. Kata kunci: characteristics, packaging, plastic
