The synthesis and pH-sensitive behavior of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and gold nanoparticles
(AuNPs) are presented. Gold nanoparticles was synthesized by Turkevich method and analyzed
by TEM and UV-Vis spectrophotometer to determine particle size and optical properties,
respectively. Synthesis of PAA was conducted in two steps, first by synthesizing of RAFT agent,
and the second step is polymerization of acrylic acid using RAFT agents. The pH-responsive
polymer was then characterize using H-NMR. AuNPs was succesfully synthesized, resulted
particle size of about 14 nm in diameter. The solution containing PAA cross-linked by AuNPs
showed color change from blue to red when pH was increased, due to the swelling of PAA in
the higher pH. It was found that the color change was reversible, and the pH transition point
was at pH 4-5.
