Volume and respiratory capacity is a description of the function of ventilation on the respiratory
system. By knowing the volume and breathing capacity, it can be seen the amount of capacity of ventilation
and abnormalities of ventilation function. The objective of the research was to investigate the difference
of forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) between male
smokers and nonsmokers in Medicine Faculty, Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. The analytical
design was used in the study with cross sectional approach. The subjects of the research were the active
students and the employees of the Medicine Faculty, Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. The sampling
method was the purposive random sampling. Data were tested using unpaired t test with SPSS 16.0.
Sample of 40 people, consist of 20 samples (50%) of smokers and 20 samples (50%) nonsmokers.
There was a difference in VEP1 between male smokers and nonsmokers, with p= 0.020. The VEP1 of
smokers is 2.03 ml and 2.532 ml for nonsmokers. The number of FVC samples is 42 people, consists of
50% of smokers and 50% non smokers. There was different of FVC between smokers and nonsmokers,
with p= 0.000. The FVC of smokers is 2,722.86 ml and 3,528.57 for nonsmokers. Based on the research,
it can be concluded that there are differences in VEP1 and KVP between male smokers and nonsmokers
in Faculty of Medicine, Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta.
