Peran Sastra Sebagai Pembentuk Karakter Multikultural

Abstract

The basic principle of multiculturalism is that naturally society is plural. Living in plurality does not go without saying that people have a multicultural awareness. The multicultural awareness is very important to build a national character for the people. This awareness will inspire people to live together peacefully in diversity. What the Indonesian people need today is a multicultural character. One way to make such kind of character is through literature. Literature is dynamic in its definition. It depends on the paradigm chosen. In the contact with the literature as a multicultural character builder, the post-structuralism perspective is suitable to apply. This perspective rejects logocentrism and welcomes plurality. The literature is viewed as the sign system which enables to create a reality. What reality means here is the national character, specifically the multicultural character.
