dc.description.abstractImpoliteness theories have been developing vigorously and they generally claim that impoliteness is communicative strategies intended to disrupt social harmony in interaction. Neverthtless little research has been conducted on impoliteness employed by second or foreign language learners. This paper reports impoliteness employed in complaint by Indonesian learners of English and discusses possible factors which contribute to the impoliteness. Research data is elicited by oral discourse completion tasks from 25 male and 25 female students studying at English department of a university in Surakarta Indonesia. The findings show that the English learners tend to use harsh and abusive complaints which could be viewed as impolite acts. Some factors might interplay with the use of impoliteness by the the learners including their perception and knowledge of the nature of L2 complaint, their language proficiency, and the availability of L2 pragmatic input in the home country setting (Indonesia).in_ID
