Abstract: The aims of this research are to describe: (1) the process approach applied in the learning process of English writing class at SMP Negeri 2 Jaten, (2) the problems faced by the teacher as well as the students, and (3) the actions to solve them. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative research which covers: incidents (the learning process of the writing class), informants (the English teacher and the students of IX grade), and documents (students’ writings and writing-score archives) as the source data. The techniques of data collection used were observation and interview. To validate the data, this researcher used triangulation method and member-check. The interactive model was applied. The results of the research are as follows: the process approach had not been applied in the teaching process of English writing although the teacher had tried to. It is due to the fact that the teacher had not fully understood about the concept of the process approach in learning writing. In addition, the teacher got some difficulties to provide appropriate media and materials. Meanwhile, the students were lack of English competence, interest, and motivation in learning writing. To overcome the problems the teacher should assign the students homeworks and writing exercises both individually and in groups, and send the teacher to attend the up-grading courses. However, there was no significant effort done by the teacher or school committee to solve the problems.en_US
