This paper presents an active control technique applied to building structures which are excited by external
dynamic loadings such as earthquake, wind, and blasting. By using the active control system, the structural vibration
responses can be decreased by giving control forces generated by actuator which is based on the responses of the
structure. The control forces given to the structure are calculated by using genetic algorithm theory. The actual external
loadings and the responses of the structure are measured by using dynamic sensors and placed at certain location on the
structure.“Smart Structure” concept which is proposed in this paper is an efficient way in conceiving and designing an
earthquake resistant building. This concept imitates the human neural system, where inside the human body there are
sensors and energy against external excitation or disturbances. The application of this system for building structures,
requires a fast and accurate calculation of control forces, so that time delay in giving control forces to the structure will
be minimized . This requirement can be achieved by using combination of an Artificial Neural Network method and
Genetic Algorithm approach.
