This study aims at identifying the oral language variety, the characteristics
of the language used, and the factors underlying the variety used by sellers
and purchasers at Pasar Gede Surakarta City. The data-collecting method
and technique include listening, note-taking, questioning, and conversing. The
data-analyzing techniques include referential and pragmatic. The outcome of
the study shows the following conclusions: (1) the language variety used by
sellers and purchasers includes the Javanese ngoko, madya krama, and krama;
(2) the characteristics of the language used are informal Indonesian, offer,
question, bilingualism, affirmation, abbreviation, statement, and request; and
(3) the factors underlying the variety include the need for being familiar, respect,
and communicativeness.
