This research aims at describing the sentence organizational patterns in a paragraph written by the second semester students of the English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. To meet the goal, the researchers use micro-structural approach. Within this approach, the researchers only employ thematic progression technique in which each sentence is divided into theme and rhyme. This technique is used for determining whether a paragraph is linear or not. The result of the research shows the sentence organizational patterns in the paragraphs are linear and nonlinear. The linear paragraphs employ the techniques of parallel progression, linear progression, and split rhyme progression. The non-linear paragraphs are due to four reasons, namely: (1) the absence of topic sentence in the paragraph; (2) grammatical errors and inappropriate usage of punctuation in supporting sentences; (3) irrelevant sentences in the paragraph; and (4) unorganized sentences.en_US
