Path-goal theory of leadership, it second situational theory of leadership has been developed by Robert J. House, it reflects an attempt to combine basic element of the expectancy model of motivation with a situational perspective. Path-goal theory identifies four specific kinds of leader behavior and is based on two primary propositions. The four types of leadership behavior are defined as follows: directive leadership, supportive directive, participative leadership and. achievement-oriented leadership, The two primary propositions on which path-goal theory rests are; The first, leader behavior will bee acceptable and satisfying when subordinates see it as an immediate source of satisfaction or as an aid to gaining future satisfaction. The second, leader behavior will bee motivating to the extent that it makes satisfaction contingent upon doing a good job and to the extent that it provides the resources necessary for effective performance. Each of the four kind of leader behavior identified will be used by an effective leader at different time and in different situations. Appropriateness of particular leadership style is asserted to be contingent on two categories of situational variables: (1) personal characteristics of subordinates, and (2) environmental pressures and demands on subordinatesen_US
