The Scarlet Letter dalam Sebuah Proses Ekranisasi

Abstract

This research aims at finding the literary transformation during the adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter into movie version. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The data of the research are the sentences and dialogs in the novel and the script movie. The main sources of data are novel and the video of The Scarlet Letter. The additional data are the books and articles about the novel and movie. Data are gained by observing the novel and the movie version and having documentation. The process of data analysis covers data reduction, data display and data verification. The literary transformation found in the research are (1) The addition such as the addition of characters and the addition of story lines (2) The cutting happens in the cutting of characters such as Pearl, John Wilson, Mr. Blackstone, the cutting of dialogs by Pearl, John Wilson, the cutting of the story about the death of Governor Winthrop, the cutting of the story about the friendship of Roger Chillingworth with Reverend Dimmesdale (3) Variations are found in the difference characterization on Peral, Reverend Dimmesdale, and Harriet Hibbins, the difference ending of movie and the appearance of the story of adultery, Indian and witch.
