KUALITAS PENGUCAPAN BUNYI BAHASA INGGRIS OLEH PEMELAJAR BAHASA INGGRIS YANG BERLATAR BELAKANG BAHASA JAWA DI SURAKARTA
Abstract
The quality of pronouncing English sounds by Javanese Learners of English (JLE) is much
influenced by their way of speaking of their native language. The study aims to examine why
Javanese English (JE) variation is to occur in JLE when producing the English sounds. The
data are JLE’s speech of English in the context of words, phrases, and sentences which are
collected by means of recording, testing and participant interview. The data analysis applies
techniques of comparison and contrast _between RP and JLE pronunciation_ in the domain
of impressionistic articulatory phonetics which is assisted by using Audio Edit Magic (AEM).
The result shows that JLE produced JE because of knowing lack of Phonology and Phonetics,
being interferenced of spelling, being confused of pronunciation in homographs or dual role
words and tongue-twister, and being lack of knowing suprasegmental features. Moreover, JE
can be performed as having the characteristics in the lack of maximal force or to be lenis and
unaspirated in JLE’s producing stops, so the case of voicing is not well differentiated. JE is
also characterized as having the sound [th, nd, t] for voiceless interdental, voiced
interdental, and flap respectively. In the meantime, JE diphtongs are focussed only in the
nucleus to pronounce than its combination with the gliding, so that this results in
differentiating the quality of producing the adjacent vowel sounds.
