The study explains the quality of pronouncing English sounds by Javanese Learners of English (JLE). The aims are: (1) to examine the level of intelligibility of JLE’s pronouncing English sounds by Native Speakers of English (NSE) or Foreign Speakers of English (FSE), and (2) to explain the formulation of JLE’s pronunciation of English sounds. The data are collected by techniques of recording, testing and participant interview. The data analysis uses techniques of comparing and contrasting between JLE’s pronunciation and Received Pronunciation (RP). The results show that generally, JLE’s pronunciation of consonant sounds are produced by the lack of maximal force and tend to be lenis while in pronouncing vowel sounds, JLE tends to produce some as its phonemes. More specifically: (1) the level of intelligibility of JLE’s pronunciation by NSE or FSE is 53,8 % or it is categorized as good. This means that JLE’s pronouncing English sounds represented in words is received and understood properly by NSE or FSE; (2) the formulation system of JLE’s pronouncing English sounds is represented in Javanese accented English, such as the sounds: [nd] to replace [δ], [th] to replace [θ], [s] to replace [z], and a tendency to simplify the production of aspirated sounds.en_US
